It wasn't so very long ago that sex was regarded as a shameful secret. Moral censure was usually based around the notion that sex sex should be functional rather than enjoyable. With the emphasis now shifted firmly towards fun rather than procreation, the sexual palette of the new millenium is a somewhat richer affair. The evidence of this is clearly reflected in the changing way photography has been able to deal with erotic subject matter in recent times. Human sexuality presents an intriguing menu of visual possibilities to the curious camera, and the fact that at any given time, a particular taste or activity may be regarded as too perverse and bizarre for for depiction by legitimate photography has rarely prevented photographers from exploring it. Fetishism, bondage, and sadomasochism are prime examples of previously taboo areas of sexuality that are now being reevaluated by mainstream society. In the past couple of decades, these subjects have become of increasing interest to legitimate photography, and the effect of this has been to regale us with much better quality images as well as to remove the stigma, both from the portrayal and from the interests themselves.
